I heard (somewhere, can’t remember where exactly) that Echtra Games, the folks behind Torchlight 3, got the boot. Yeah, Zynga called it quits on them. Kind of wild, right?
So, this bigwig company, Take-Two—you might have heard of them—popped up and confirmed the closure in a chat with IGN. San Francisco studio, see ya later. The reason? Some “strategic realignment.” Whatever that means.
Now, Max Schaefer—he’s like a big name, helped create the original Torchlight. He ditched Runic Games back in 2016, and voila! Echtra Games was born. They first came under Perfect World’s umbrella, and then Echtra pushed out Torchlight 3 in 2020.
Fast forward to 2021, and Zynga scoops up Echtra. Didn’t tell us for how much. What’s up with the secrecy, huh? Anyways, Perfect World still hangs onto Torchlight 3. Echtra’s been dabbling in some mystery RPG and also poking at CSR Racing and Star Wars: Hunters. Seems complicated.
Zynga drops the bombshell that Echtra’s done, cutting off future projects and letting people go. Real bummer. They said something about reshuffling and respecting the folks affected. Hope they really mean it.
